Individuals
The tax filing deadline for Individual Tax Return (T1) is April 30.
The filing deadline is extended to June 15 for sole proprietors or self-employed individuals and their spouses. However, tax payments are still due on April 30.
If you receive employment income, you generally do not have to worry too much about owing taxes, as income tax has been withheld from your pay cheques.
If you have other income sources, such as business income, investment income, and capital gains, you should make quarterly tax instalments on March 15, June 15, September 15, and December 15. The tax instalments can be based on estimated tax for the current year or the instalments base for the preceding year.
Some people misunderstand that they don’t need to file taxes if they do not owe taxes. If you expect a refund, you will only receive the refund after you file your taxes because CRA will not automatically give out tax refunds. You may also miss out on GST/HST credits or other refundable tax credits. You also need to file tax returns to establish your contribution room for a TFSA (Tax Free Savings Account) or to apply for the Canada Child Benefit.
February 29, 2024 is the deadline for contributing to an RRSP (Registered Retirement Savings Plan) for the 2023 tax year.
Corporations
The tax filing deadline for Corporate Tax Return (T2) is six months after its fiscal year-end.
Generally, all corporation taxes are due two months after the fiscal year-end. The deadline is extended to three months for Canadian-controlled private corporations with a business income of less than $500,000. Except in certain special situations, corporations are required to pay their taxes in monthly instalments or quarterly instalments.
GST/HST reporting and remittance deadlines can be monthly, quarterly or annually. You can find out your deadlines by signing in to CRA My Business Account.
T4 and T5 information returns are due on February 28 of the next calendar year (or February 29 in 2024.)
Partnerships
The partnership information returns for Corporate Partnerships are due 5 months after fiscal year-end. For partnerships of individuals, the information returns are due on March 31.
Trusts
T3 information returns are due 90 days after year-end.
Payments to Non-residents
NR4 information returns are due on March 31.
*If any of the above dates fall on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, the due date will be the next business day.
